Field pea + hullless oat for forage
There is interest by North Dakota farmers/ranchers in growing field
pea ('Trapper') and hullless oat as a high protein forage. NDSU
released 'Paul' hullless (naked) oat in 1994, which is the variety
of interest. Grain yield is less than conventional oat varieties but
protein content is several percentage points higher (3-4%). ND
research work on this subject has been limited. Has there been work
done in other midwest states using field pea and naked oat for
forage? In particular, I'm interested in seeding rates, harvest stage
and method, and nutrient content of the forage mix. Thanks.
