We completed research trials in 1994 and 1995, topdressing alfalfa
stubble with 3500-4000 gallons of manure slurry/A within one week of first
harvest. We ensiled manured and unmanured alfalfa, using two silage
inoculants and a control. We evaluated pH, nutrient content, mold,
lactobacilli, clostridia, streptococci, coliforms, yeast, and molds both
before and 6-7 weeks after ensiling. We also screened for vomitoxin.
In a nutshell, manure had no adverse effect on ensiling nor on any
important quality parameters in either year. Inoculants had minimal effect
although we did not measure dry matter losses. We also evaluated simulated
bunk life by measuring silage temperature in aerated silage, and did a
final vomitoxin screen at the end of the bunk life evaluation. Again,
nothing substantive. We think you can manure just-harvested fields with
no adverse effects on silage quality.
