'Joe Burton' berseem release
To: Forage colleagues:
Joe Burton', a newly selected berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum
L.) cultivar, has been release and is available in breeder, foundation, and
certified seed classes. Berseem clover is an annual clover with excellent
productivity in Mediterranean climates and with high yields as a
spring-seeded annual forage crop for colder climates.
Joe Burton was selected from Multicut' berseem for superior virus
resistance. Mean canopy infection rate for Joe Burton was 10% while
Bigbee' was 84% and Multicut was 38% in two years of study. The viruses
identified were clover yellow vein potyvirus, alfalfa mosaic virus, bean
yellow mosaic virus, and cucumber mosaic virus. Joe Burton has averaged
about 7 tons/acre dm/year under California conditions. Berseem appears to
be completely resistant to Egyptian alfalfa weevil.
The name was selected to honor Dr. Joseph C. Burton (now deceased),
who, as vice-president for research and development at Nitragin Co. (now
Lipha Chemicals, Milwaukee, WI), was vitally instrumental in rhizobium
isolation and development, essential to the success of berseem clover and
other legumes in California and nationwide.
Kilogram amounts of seed are available for trial upon request.
