Hay Stacker & Balers
Being from the Northeast, we have little experience with hay stackers (for
40# bales) or the large rectangular balers (1000# to 2000# bales). I would
like to learn about this machinery for a particular farmer in my county as
well as for myself to see if it will fit into our production systems. I
would appreciate any information, articles, extension bulletins, on this
equipement.
Some questions about the hay stacker:
What size stacker can be run by a 60 HP tractor? number of bales in a stack?
How time efficient are they?
Do's and dont's of stack storage?
Is there any experience with using a movable wire to allow free-choice
feeding right on a stack?
How much of a slope creates safety concerns?
Some questions about large rectangular balers:
What size tractor does is take to run these balers?
How many tons per hour (acres) is a normal working speed?
What is the axle weight? Is soil compaction a problem?
How are the bales moved around once they are formed?
Are large rectangular bales a good way to ship hay long distances (cross
country)?
At what moisture can hay be baled - is it different than for 40# bales (20%)?
At what degree of slope do these balers become impractical?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
