FW: Potato IPM for Ukraine

Dear All,

A quick search of the CAB ABSTRACTS database found 375 articles on control 
of Colorado beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) in the Russian or Ukrainian 
language. I had a look through them an tried to identify articles that could 
be applied locally in Ukraine (see below). For those papers that describe 
cheap organic/ecological methods, I have attached the full abstract as well.

I know there is no money to obtain these papers in Ukraine. However, would 
someone be prepared to sponsor the photocopying of these papers and sending 
them to Ukraine? Most articles are only 2-3 pages long.

AB:  The author, in the Ternopol region reports that when hemp [Cannabis 
sativa] was grown round a plot of potato the potato plants nearest to the 
hemp were free from infestation by Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) whereas 
the others became heavily infested. When flowering hemp plants were torn up 
and waved over infested potato plants, the beetles fell to the ground 
paralysed. When a decoction of hemp plants prepared by boiling them in water 
was applied to infested potato plants, no living beetles or larvae remained 
after 45 min. A similar preparation containing sunflower oil and starch 
killed the insects in 30 min and kept the plot free from them until the end 
of the season. It is reported in a footnote that another worker has also 
obtained good results with a hemp decoction.

AB:  Several species of toads, frogs and lizards prey on the adults and 
larvae of Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) on potato in the USSR, and tests 
were carried out in Stavropol in 1974 on the habits of the green toad in 
this respect, in both field conditions and a terrarium. In a day, two toads 
in the terrarium ate 7 adults and 20 larvae, and 2 adults and 5 larvae were 
detected in the stomachs of two toads collected in the field. The toads ate 
only insects within easy reach (on the ground), and thus consumption in the 
terrarium was greater than in the field. The counts showed that in a potato 
plot about 4100 m2 in area where there were 20 toads (49/ha) they would 
destroy 40 adults and 100 larvae/day. Activity is nocturnal, and it is 
possible that the toads might annihilate undetected small colonies of the 
beetle in natural situations. Measures to encourage these toads in potato 
fields such as providing water in spring and heaps of stones under which 
they can shelter by day, are suggested.

TI:  The use of food baits in the control of the Colorado beetle.

AB:  In the Voronezh district of the USSR, the author has frequently noticed 
adults of Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) on the remains of potatoes and 
tomatoes thrown on heaps or floating on water and he therefore tested 
various food materials as baits for the beetle. The work was done during the 
flight period of the second generation in 1975. Tubers of potato and fruits 
of tomato, ground leaves and stalks of various plants and water extracts of 
them were exposed on the soil in dry warm weather. Almost all proved 
attractive, but the best were soaked fruit-stems of tomato. They became less 
attractive as they dried, and so potato tubers and tomatoes, which remained 
moist for a fortnight or more were more practicable. Tubers 3-3.5 cm in 
diameter constantly attracted over 20 beetles each. Pieces of tuber placed 
on the soil were found within a few hours, and it is thought that such baits 
might play a part in the control of the beetle in early spring, when 
alternative food is scarce.
