I'm posting this to the list in case others have the same question. I've
found a good service provider of low cost web space - NetMar.
You need to have your own separate dial-up access (like aol, or a slip or
ppp account) for this provider. You can contact NetMar on the web by
going to http://netmar.com or by sending email to staff@netmar.com.
For a one-time $25 set up, and as little as $15 per month (one megabyte
of space), you can get a web page up and running. Their site has links
to primer materials on how to author your own site (it's amazingly
easy), or they will spiff one up for you for $50/hour.
For an additional $10/month, and a $100 fee for the first two years, you
can establish a site under your own "domain."
That means that instead of a long, complicated address like
- http://netprovider.com/hijinks/mypage.html -
you can have a simple one people can easily remember, like
- http://onaroll.com -
(that's the address of my pages for Jesse Helms Toilet Paper and related
political parody stuff - I put these pages together using wordperfect and
following instructions from an html primer I downloaded, and using
graphics programs on computers at Kinko's to format the images)
Also, a recent poster to this list - Intergalactic Garage - will set up
one page for you, including two links, for an annual charge of $50. Ask
them about charges for other links or extra work or web space. Contact
them at http://www.intrepid.net/igg/igg.html or email to igg@intrepid.net.
There are many deals out there, with different levels of service and
access. Weigh the level of support and service you need against the
cost of basic service and add-on charges. Shop around. Remember, the
nature of the internet makes it about as easy to work with someone across
the country as around the corner, so don't let geography stop you.
Good luck, and feel free to contact me off-list for more info.
