Chiku Wetlands Campaign

I have been involved with permaculture for a number of years and have been
teaching in Taiwan. I was very interested to read of your recent visit to
Taiwan.

I was recently asked to represent UK Environmental groups and put the case
for sustainable development for an area of wetland under threat from the
government's plan to allow two companies build an oil refinery
,petrochemical plant and a steel refinery on the 5000 ha site.

I understand you have already been contacted by the Formosa Association for
Coastal Protection.

I attended a press conference arranged by environmental groups including the
above and residents of the area bound to be affected by the two companies'
proposal (which has now reached the second stage of processing). The mayor
who was elected on a conservationist mandate is sympathetic to the
environmentalist viewpoint.

Following the conference members of environmental groups were physically
and verbally abused in front of police by thugs supporting the development
and one man was badly hurt.

I intend to support the environmental groups in this issue. If you need more
information please feel free to fax or email us.
