I tend to think that Usenet is very conducive to such attacks, for
several reasons. One is simply anonymity, 13 and 14 years olds can
hide behind any persona they wish, and claim various expertise.
Because of their actual inexperience, when challenged on fact they
have no recourse except insults. In addition, the physical distance
allows them to say things that, in person, might earn them a punch in
the nose.
I am sure there are other reasons for such behavior, but I think the
primary ones are outlined above; inexperience, immaturity and
cowardice.
Not that an occasional insult cannot be quite satisfying, I have
stooped to such myself. Some of Yuri's show real promise toward the
development of an imagination, and can be quite funny. But I think
that, in general, it is a sign of maturity and intelligence to avoid
ad hominem arguments.
