Thanks to both Bill and Harriett.

The construction paper is probably the best environmental solution. But...
a flame thrower sounds like MUCH more fun than removing all my gravel to
bury construction paper.... ;)

I've tried the boiling water. It does kill the less hardy weeds, but the
couchgrass is so established, that I can't get all the root system,
although I can kill the center part, I end up giving the peripheral bits a
nice _warm_ water bath... they love it. I persisted for a month, using
leftover kettle water, pasta water, whatever was boiling hot already...

I shall try a propane torch... although I have reservations about its
_real_ impact as well...(how can I recycle the empty bottle? What about the
cost of production? blah blah blah... maybe the real answer is to learn to
appreciate couchgrass :) )

Thanks all, for your time and thought!

Stephen
