It's a large hole no deeper than the root ball. Twice as wide as the
root ball, remove only the larger rocks, add no soil ammendments to 
the back fill. Place compost on top of the soil out to the drip line of 
the tree. Place a 3 to 6 in.wood chip mulch over the compost.
Don't place any ammendments or mulch within a foot of the trunk.
