RE: Upcoming Conference on
EQUITY. HUMAN HEALTH, & THE WORLD'S RESOURCES:FOOD SECURITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

SAVE November 3, 4, and 5, 1997 to join us in the first major event of the
Center for a Livable Future at Johns Hopkins University. At this Colloquium
entitled -- EQUITY. HUMAN HEALTH, AND THE WORLD'S RESOURCES: FOOD SECURITY
AND SOCIAL JUSTICE invited speakers members of the Johns Hopkins Faculty
will tackle the complex and important issues of equitable opportunity to
achieve a healthy life in a world of increasing population and finite
resources. These are problems of great significance that we need to
address as a society, as members of a university community, and as
individuals. Are we protecting the most basic prerequisites for future
generations?

James Grant, the late director of UNICEF, warned about the "vicious spiral"
of population growth, poverty, and environmental degradation - each
component exacerbating and accelerating the trend toward destruction. The
goal of the Colloquium is to focus attention on what changes are needed in
current practices of consumption, agricultural production, public policy
and economic accounting to feed the world's people equitably without
harming the environment; to identify areas of scientific consensus and
controversy , and to prioritize needs for more research.

Details of time, place and speakers are listed below.

Sincerely yours,

Robert S. Lawrence, MD
