Community food security conference announcement

The Community Food Security Coalition will be holding its first national
conference in Los Angeles on 10/24-10/26.

This will be a unique opportunity to learn about innovative projects
nationwide, take part in critical food security debates, and play an active
role in shaping the future and direction of the national Coalition.

Schedule:

Friday, October 24, 1997
Pre-Conference Events

Morning 8:30am - 1:00pm
"Best of LA" Field Trips: Here's your chance to see firsthand some of the
exciting projects going on in Los Angeles. You can choose from two
concurrent, half-day tours:

(1) Urban Agriculture Tour - This tour will show how agriculture can exist -
and, indeed, thrive - in the city. Planned stops include visits to a
farmers' market, a horticultural therapy and market garden program, and an
operating farm in the middle of the city.

(2) Food Access Tour - This tour will highlight innovative programs that
improve access to healthy foods in disadvantaged neighborhoods while
providing employment opportunities and job training. Planned stops include
visits to a food processor, an inner-city grocery store, a market garden, and
a food bank.

Afternoon 1:30pm - 5:00pm
Short Courses: On Friday afternoon, CFS will offer half-day courses designed
to help you evaluate and address food security issues in your own community.
These hands-on, interactive workshops are offered on three topics:

(1) The Seven Bad Habits of Community Food Organizations
Have you ever spent $1,000 to produce $500 of food for low income families?
Have you ever tried to simply meet too many objectives at once? Then this
workshop is for you. Bring an open mind, an honest heart, a sense of humor,
your own list of bad habits and let's "get naked" together.

Mark Winne, Executive Director of Hartford Food System, has made every
mistake known to mankind in his 25 years of community food experience.

Gail Feenstra is a food system analyst at University of California SAREP.

(2) Food Security Planning & Funding
This workshop will focus on components of CFS planning and evaluation
essential to successful organizing and funding of CFS initiatives. We will
cover the nuts and bolts of networking, needs assessments, long-term funding
strategies, and evaluation planning.

Hugh Joseph holds a doctorate in community nutrition and is a staff
researcher at Tufts University.

(3) A Marketing Approach to Community Food Security Work
This "guerrilla marketing" course will assist CFS practitioners to develop
marketing and communication strategies for small organizations on a
shoestring budget.

Michael Rozyne is founder and managing director of Red Tomato, a
community-based Northeast campaign to change how people think and shop in
relation to food.
Note: The field trips & short courses are offered as a supplement to the
two-day conference and are priced each at $20 for Coalition members and $25
for non-members.
