The worms most commonly used for composting are the Eosinia foetida aka the 
red wiggler, the manure worm, red worm, or even yellow tails.  You can buy 
them at bait shops but you will pay a premium price because people who fish 
only need 25 or so.  To start up a vermicomposting project you will need at 
least a thousand worms (about a pound).  The bait shop will usually direct 
you to their supplier.  They do use red wigglers for a certain type of fish 
during a certain time of year--sorry can't remember which one.  Red 
wigglers are usually quite small compared to your average garden variety 
earthworm.  The worm growers have neat tricks to fatten them up for the 
bait suppliers and make it easier to put the worm on the hook.
