welcome to the evolution of the orange room.

07.26.01

greetings! there is progress afoot in the orange room. the original message (from 07.09.01 - copied below) explains a little of what has been happening and i will attempt to fill in the rest here.

the ultimate goal is to have a nice springboard site from which to launch various collaborative web projects. right now, mark and i are preparing the new face of orangeroom.org and we think it is going to be pretty cool. but let me do a quick re-cap of recent meetings:

[07.08.01] this was the first actual meeting and we pretty much just bandied about ideas and talked about doing this project for fun and learning, so that no one goes in with some incorrect perception that this was another "get rich quick" scheme. we also discussed the (eventual) sharing of costs for the venture. bandwidth and servers ain't free, yo.

[07.15.01] on this sunday, we actually got into some techie stuff. greg jumped on the openbsd install for the firewall. greg was also kind enough to get me the network cards necessary to build this network. we got the install done just fine, but we had some difficulties getting various interfaces to talk (i.e. send packets). this has now become my on-going homework project. once it is up and running, i plan on giving an exposition on "what exactly made it all happen?"

[07.22.01] this was jay j fadd's night to shine. and shine he did. you can see some of that shining here (thanks to joe)! jay dropped mad knowledge; talkin' all about "introduction to the d.o.m. in javascript" and even got /me/ to understand a few things. also, i think this was the first in a series on javascript coming from jay. thanks, jay!!

for our next meeting (upcoming sunday 07.29.01), the illustrious badmonkey will be showing up to deliver an "overview of the xml spec" with additional detail about "cocoon." (whatever the hell that is ;) a lot of folks have been looking forward to an xml primer, especially me.

so, that is our progress meter for now. hopefully, you will continue to check back and see what is going on. please feel free to participate, either online or in person. you can send us suggestions for upcoming meeting topics, suggestions on improving the site, or whatever you'd like.

new info relating to the orangeroom.org web collective.

the orangeroom.org project is now underway and will soon involve the moving of orangeroom services from the generous ibiblio web space to a new dedicated hosting solution. several people have expressed interest in contributing to this effort. as of tonight, that list includes:

david r. matusiak ~ primary orangeroom architect and network administrator

mark andrews ~ creative director and stinky dog owner

jay ballenger ~ htmelf and chief mullet

joe kinder ~ minister of socialist affairs

greg cox ~ minister of defense and resident mad scientist

to be added to this list, one need apply oneself by sending an email to any of the folks listed above. meetings sunday nights after the simpsons in the orange room. rsvp is possible.

the initial mission of the orangeroom.org project is to foster a cooperative atmosphere where tech professionals of all types can come to exchange information. this will enable us to quickly learn new skills in information architecture and web development while creating an attractive and functional portfolio of work. more info will be posted as it arrives. please check back .
