Title: A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COLLECTIVE BARGAINING ENVIRONMENTS AND THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to attempt to determine the extent to which a selected group of librarians employed in institutions of higher education with collective bargaining for librarians and a group of librarians employed in institutions of higher education without collective bargaining for librarians are involved in a selected group of professional activities and to determine if the extent of involvement in these activities by these two groups of librarians varies significantly.
It was hypothesized that there would be no significant difference between the professional activities of academic librarians employed in collective bargaining environments and those employed in non-collective bargaining environments. For testing purposes the general hypothesis was broken down into fourteen separate hypotheses, each one related to a specific activity selected for this study.
In order to test the hypotheses of this study the mean scores of the respondents' activities in each environment were compared for statistically significant differences at the .05 level using the Student "T" test. The mean scores of the activities of the respondents in the two environments were further analyzed by calculation of analysis of covariance for the activities of the respondents in the two environments with groups of professional background and experience data as control variables.
Using the data gathered from the two groups of librarians as a whole the general hypothesis was accepted. However, when applied to academic librarians employed in "universities", the hypothesis was accepted with qualifications.
