Title: A quantitative model for the selection of journals in biomedical literature and comparative use

Abstract: This study attempts to design an objective journal selection model for identifying ,communicative, journals among those cited by two user communities, one
from a technologically developed (TD) country and the o other from a less technologically developed' (LTD) country. Schistosomiasis was identified as the main research interest of both communities. Journals cited in review 'l articles on Schistosomiasis were considered representative sources; and were therefore used as control groups to
test those citied in the research articles of the user communities mentioned above.

The literature collected covered a period of one year, 1978. This year was considered sufficiently current to reflect existing trends and old enough to allow complete retrieval of the required literature for the study.

Three measures, the Brilllouin information measure, .Leavitt's Centrality Index and Goffman's Digraph measure were used to measure and rank the relative communicativeness of each journal within a set.
The results obtained from the application of the Centrality Index, judged the ,most suitable technique to the present data, were used to make comparisons between the two user communities and their corresponding control groups, and to draw conclusions about the lib library systems serving them. These comparisons lead to
the conclusions that local file relevance of any information
system can be established by a familiarity with
the activities of the clientele through citation analysis
based on .their published articles; that researchers in the TD and LTD. countries do not necessarily use the same sources of information even though both might be engaged in research within the same nominal subject field field.
