Title: SEGMENTATION IN PICTORIAL SLIDE SEQUENCES

Abstract: This study was undertaken to pursue behavioral indications that temporally sequenced still pictorial information is processed in syntactically structured segments. Applying the methodology of the probe-latency technique as adapted by J. M. Carroll and T. G. Bever for the syntactic analysis of cinematic information, the organization of sequences of 35 millimeter color slides was examined with regard to whether serially presented pictorial information is grouped into major processing units.

The research hypothesis for the study was: Viewers immediately process pictorial slide sequences by segmentation. The null hypothesis was tested on five types of organization for sequences of slides.

Thirty volunteer subjects from the student body of Emory University were presented with thirty trial series of slides. The trial series had five different types of organization. Types One to Three were logical presentations of slides in the order of the event depicted, yet varied with regard to hypothetical syntactic principles (camera angle and distance from the subject photographed). Types Four and Five were randomly organized, both with and without logical end points with respect to the event photographed.

The null hypothesis that viewers do not immediately process pictorial slide sequences by segmentation was rejected for Type Two Organization of slide series. The null hypothesis could not be rejected for Types of Organization One and Four.

Types of Organization Three and Five (the most carefully organized and the most randomly organized of the types of sequences tested), displayed statistically significant differences in probe recognition times. These differences, however, were in the opposite direction from what was predicted by the linguistic model. This behavior could be described as accelerated access. Information from pictorial slide sequences which had been processed (probes slides from the first sequence in a trial series) were recognized faster than information in some more preliminary stage of being processed (probe slides from the second sequence in a trial series).

Although this research found strong evidence that for a specific type of slide sequence the information was processed in syntactic segments, there was also evidence indicating that the linguistic model might not be generally applicable.
