Title: An examination of gender and sex-role differences in the offering of accounts

Abstract: This dissertation proposed a study to determine whether men and women offer accounts of behavior in different ways. The work of Gilligan was used as a theoretical framework to suggest that women offer accounts that display a morality resting on a responsibility orientation while male accounts focus on a justice orientation, where abstract rules and rights are paramount.

A two-part study was conducted to test this assertion. First, accounts were collected by recording student responses to vignettes. The vignettes differed by the reproacher's biological sex and type of relationship. Transcripts of the responses were coded based on Gilligan's theory of gender differences in morality, and these results were used to construct a questionnaire. The questionnaire and a Bem Sex-Role Inventory were administered to 143 college students. It was hypothesized that the offering of accounts would differ according to sex role or gender. For sex role this hypothesis was not confirmed. While the expected gender differences were not confirmed, the tendencies identified by Gilligan were noticeable. Results from a MANOVA suggested that males used significantly more justice accounts than females. The second hypothesis, that there would be a difference in the account offered based on the type of relationship between the participants, was confirmed. Further analysis showed that mixed and justice accounts were used significantly more frequently with strangers, and care accounts were used significantly more frequently with friends. The third hypothesis, that the type of account offered would be based on the sex composition of the participants, was not confirmed. However, a MANOVA suggested significant differences in the types of accounts offered based on the reproacher's sex. Separate ANOVA's found that--regardless of sender's sex--females received more justice accounts and fewer care accounts and males received significantly more mixed accounts and fewer justice accounts.

Finally, significant differences in the type of account offered were found based on the respondents' school affiliation. Respondents from a small, private, church-affiliated college employed significantly more care accounts and mixed accounts compared to respondents from a large, public, research University. However, the use of justice accounts was not related to the respondents' school.
