Abstract: This study examined the existence and significance of research front literature in the field of Air Pollution by Sulfur Dioxide. It was initially assumed that the research front papers of the field would include the most communicative and descriptive papers of the field, would reflect the developing research areas of the field, and could be used to anticipate the areas of future research. A set of 400 journal articles constituted the data and was used to construct a communication array to display the citation relationships among papers. Several experiments were conducted to test these assumption using three analytical techniques. First, a Z-score technique was used as a statistical method to segregate the research front papers from the background papers. Second, the Communication Influence Measure was used to measure the communicativeness of a paper in a citation digraph. Third, the Brillouin Measure was used to identify descriptive papers n a Co-Citation Graph. Results of this study indicated that there is a research front in the field of Air Pollution by Sulfer Dioxide, that Z-Score technique can be used to segregate the research front papers from the background papers, that the Co-citation technique has the capability of clustering papers in distinct subject clusters, and that the research front papers are frequently the most descriptive and communicative papers of the field. The results also suggest that research front papers frequently introduce the new keywords into the field, and that the research front papers are indicative of the subject content of the field and predictive of future research trends. |
