The increased involvement of African American workers in the production of television images is seen as having an impact on the way television shows portrays black life and people. This dissertation uses a production of culture approach to explore the relationship between the racial identity of television workers and the production of entertainment television. Studies of the production of culture focus on issues of the creation, marketing, and distribution of programs and how or whether these processes have an impact on content. In-depth interviews with 16 African American producers, writers, directors, production assistants, and executives focused on how respondents see themselves within the system of production, how they define themselves as producers of content, and how they construe their professional and ethical responsibilities. The responses of these broadcast and cable television employees show that they see themselves as being viewed as "other," they generally resent the organizational constraints that limit the role that many African Americans workers play in the production process, and they believe in the importance of an integrated workplace environment. Respondents also described how they develop a deep understanding of white culture while most whites have little knowledge of African American life and minimal awareness of African Americans' understanding of white culture. This dissertation found that listening to African American workers talk about their experiences helps to uncover the process whereby difference is created and recreated in both the workplace and on the television screen. |
