Title: An information systems-based model of graduate-level distance education

Abstract: For centuries, education involved students and educators gathering in one place to study. Although this paradigm still predominates in U.S. graduate education, it is slowly being supplanted by a more distance independent paradigm. Such education can be viewed as an information system in which a variety of teaching approaches are used to achieve certain instructional goals, mediated by different technologies. Theories underlying this concept include Buckland's and Allen's information systems constructs; Kuhlthau's typology of teaching approaches, based on assisting students in information seeking; and Bates' media and technology typology. Since this information system may also have a disciplinary context, Biglan's disciplinary characteristics matrix also underlies the concept.

A model was developed based on these theoretical constructs and used to explore the relationships among media used by educators, their instructional goals, and the teaching approaches they use in graduate-level distance education as well as whether the disciplinary orientation of course material influences this relationship.

The study found that professorial rank and experience with distance education technologies do not seem to be related to the teaching approaches, media, or media/teaching approach combinations used in the courses studied.

The faculty members' self-reported instructional goals seem to be related to both out-of-class teaching approaches and media use but not with in-class teaching approaches or media use. Self-reported teaching approaches seem to be related to in-class media use. Disciplinary orientation seems to be related to in-class teaching approaches, in-class and out-of-class media use, and in-class and out-of-class media/teaching approach combinations.

The findings, of this study indicate that knowledge of the relationships among media used by educators, their instructional goals, and the teaching approaches they use support the use of an information systems-based model for studying graduate-level distance education. The findings suggest that additional studies of self-reported instructional goals, self-reported teaching approaches, and disciplinary orientation as they relate to the model are warranted.
