Title: Unusual routines and computer-mediated communication systems

Abstract: Unusual routines are dysfunctional interaction patterns which have become everyday behavior within an organization. This project is a field study of the unusual routines in a medium sized organization during the time a new computer mediated communication system was implemented. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with organization members, and qualitative analysis employed to identify unusual routines and changes in unusual routines related to the implementation. This study generated a two level theoretical model of unusual routine dynamics, containing paths of both single loop and double loop structurational processes within the organization, catalyzed by implementation of the communication system. The study also generated practical insights into the social and technical dimensions of the organization as it processed an innovation in its communication system.
