If there is a direct analogy between navigating physical space and information space, information systems may be improved by using the same cues in them that we use to navigate in the natural world. In order to investigate the analogy between physical and information spaces, this dissertation explores the role of providing structural representations and multimodal cues to improve web search memory during navigation of information spaces. In particular, it investigates the appropriateness of providing hierarchical or linear displays of history information with associated thumbnail views and unique sounds. The results did not directly support the hypotheses, because none of the main effects were significant. However, particular combinations of the variables led to significantly different performance and usability results for particular classes of users. Specifically, an individual difference was found that indicated that the usability of the system was improved for some people and degraded for others by providing multimodal cues. The differences found provide support for the analogy between physical and information spaces, at least for some classes of users. Additional research needs to identify the personality construct that may be associated with this individual difference. |
