Title: The continuing education needs of academic librarians in the south of Thailand

Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the continuing education needs for academic librarians in the south of Thailand and to compare the needs identified by the academic librarians with the library directors' perceptions of those needs. It focused on identifying the desired continuing education topics including technology related topics, delivery preferences, and incentives for participation in continuing education.

Two questionnaires were developed for academic librarians and library directors of college and university libraries. The case study of a university library and a college library was used to gain information in-depth. The return rate of the questionnaires was 82.50%. Data were analyzed by percentage and frequency using SPSS 10.0 for Windows.

The population of this study is 126 professional librarians and 62 library directors of colleges and universities in the south of Thailand. Fifty-eight percent of the librarians had bachelor degrees and 41.30% of them had master's degrees. The majority (65.40%) of the directors had bachelor degrees as their highest level of education, 34.6% of them had master's degrees. None of the librarians or the directors had doctoral degrees.

There are fifty-two topics of continuing education in eight categories proposed in this study. These topics are concerned with technology and related management issues. The eight topic categories are the Internet, Web site creation, computer software applications, automation of libraries, networking, digital libraries, electronic information searching, and selected management issues.

The results show that both groups of the respondents feel the Internet category and automation of libraries category have the most interesting topics for academic librarians. Networking and resource sharing and information access in an electronic environment are in the top 10 topics of interest for both groups of the respondents. In addition the librarians chose collection development and management, online database searching and cataloging electronic resources, networking technologies, and overview of digital libraries in the first 10 topics of interest. While the library directors chose teamwork in libraries, user education, information ethics, and evaluation of systems and services.

The preferred location for continuing education is in a university or college. Monday through Friday in the summer time is the time preference. The duration of time preferred is two days or three days. The time frame can be longer, dependent on the continuing education subjects. The incentive to participate in continuing education for the librarians is professional growth while the library directors feel that the incentive that motivates academic librarians to participate in continuing education is the institution giving release time and paying expenses.
