Abstract: Ninety-three adolescent cross country runners were evaluated for differences in anthropometric measures, selected dietary habits, and energy expenditures. Of the athletes in this investigation, 30 were oligo/amenorrheic (O/A), 27 prepubescent (P), and 36 eumenorrheic (EU). Body composition was measured via bio-electrical impedance. Nutritional assessment was based on three-day dietary records. Energy expenditure was gathered from a 24-hour activity record. The data were analyzed using MANOVA, and Scheffe's post-hoc test to determine the nature of group differences. Both tests utilized a p $\le$.05 level of significance. Higher energy expenditures for the O/A group were present when compared to the P and EU groups. In addition, comparison of the three groups revealed significantly lower dietary intake for the O/A runners when compared to the P runners for caloric intake, grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, calcium, phosphorus, and iron intakes. Anthropometric measures of the O/A and EU subjects revealed similar values. Both the O/A and EU groups had higher body fat percentages, heights, and weights when compared to the P group. No significant differences were present for the dietary intakes of magnesium, zinc, calcium:phosphorus ratio, and the percentage of the diet composed of protein. It appears that O/A adolescent cross country runners generally have higher energy expenditures than their EU and P peers. Along with high energy expenditures, low dietary intakes of certain nutrients, and minerals appear to be of concern relative to the pubertal development and maintenance of regular menstrual cycles for O/A adolescent athlete. |
