Title: The faculty library committee in the university

Abstract: The faculty library committee is one of the oldest and most universal committees in American universities. A library committee was established at the university of Virginia in 1835, and between 1885 and 1910 library committees were among the initial standing committees appointed in twenty-two colleges and universities. The literature on university library administration often discusses the importance of the faculty library committee, but never analyzes it in any depth. This study is addressed to the faculty and to the role and function of the library committee in relation to current issues and problems in university librarianship.

The faculty library committees in five institutions, the University of California, Davis, the University of Washington, the University of Southern California, Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley were studied. Data for the study were collected from committee records (the committee members, past and present chairmen, and library and university administrators; and observation of library committee meetings.

The committees included in the study dealt, for the most part, with matters that have been within the traditional purview of the library committee. The committees discussed chiefly the university library budget and the book budget; book selection policies; library personnel problems; space needs; branch library policy; undergraduate libraries; planning for new buildings; faculty abuse of borrowing privileges, and other circulation matters; library service policies; library automation, library security; and the reclassification of the collections.

The following conclusions were arrived at: 1) student participation (i.e., student members or observers appointed to the committee; 2) the role of the committee chairman was crucially important in the committees studied; 3) the relationship of the university librarian to the committee is also crucial; 4) the committee functions as a liaison between the faculty and the library, but in a limited capacity; and 5) the committee acts as a support agency for the librarian in matters of the budget, particularly the book budget, and for library space needs.
