Title: TIME ALLOCATION IN STUDENTS' BIBLIOGRAPHIC DECISIONS: AN ECONOMIC AND TIME BUDGET APPROACH

Abstract: The primary goal of this dissertation is to help achieve an understanding of the information gathering behavior of students. The first six chapters contain critical reviews of the literature of educational production functions, measures of library effectiveness, decision making, time budget analysis, and time in economic models.

Chapter 7 lays down the model for the information decision making of students based on a systematic conceptual integration of the findings and knowledge derived from these reviews. The input to the decision process consists of the education, time budgeting, and economic subsystems comprising the students' information environment. The input is the choice of a search strategy and an information channel.

The model identifies the effects of the flow of information between students and faculty members, the overall time allocation of students, and the opportunity costs existing in the market place on their bibliographical activities. The model also determines the causes of the conditions of certainty and uncertainty in the information environment of students and relates them to the above factors. The concept of expectation is useful in associating the value students place on their time with an "expected wage rate."

Three search strategies are considered: the optimum, bounded, and satisficing search. Functional relationships are derived for these three search strategies. Chapter 7 examines the characteristics of information channels and indicate how the choice of an information channel is related to the search strategy of students, the educational requirements, the nature of the information it delivers, and the value of students' time.

The dissertation identifies two patterns of students. On one extreme some students are "better off" in every aspect. They are subject to conditions of certainty and their fields are highly demanded. On the other extreme some students are "worse off" and spend much effort and time toward the completion of their education.

The dissertation concludes by recommending some policies to librarians and information specialists.
