Title: GRADUATE EDUCATION FOR LIBRARIANSHIP IN VENEZUELA: A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to establish a foundation for understanding that can facilitate the planning and design of the graduate programs in library education now being contemplated in Venezuela.
This study addresses two important questions: What is the role of librarianship in society trying to overcome underdevelopment; and how can an appropriate graduate education be developed that will meet the requirements of that role?
The dissertation is organized in two distinct thematic parts, with a concluding synthesizing chapter. The first part reviews and analyzes conditions in library education in Latin America and goes on to trace the origins of the library movement which culminated in the creation of the Venezuelan National Information System. It then goes on to an analysis of the problems and issues that librarianship as a profession needs to address in the arena of Third-World development. The second part examines the ideological and paradigmatic underpinnings of librarianship as a discipline, and sets them in the broader context of contemporary thought and the new orientations emerging in the field of communication. The final chapter brings together, for synthesis and interpretation, the problems addressed in the first part and the theoretic perspectives explored in the second part. From this synthesis, it draws some conclusions about the future of education for librarianship.
