Title: THE ACTIVITIES AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ACADEMIC LIBRARY DIRECTOR IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTEXT (MANAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP)
Abstract: This study investigated the role of the academic library director in the framework of an environmental model developed for this research. The model separates the library organization's external environment into two components, the user or consumer environment, and the control environment of the parent organization, which is the source of permission for the library's goals and objectives, and which supplies the needed resources.
Library directors in 42 universities in the United States, a selected group of their dean-level peers, and a group of library middle managers were surveyed to gather measures of three dimensions: perceptions of the directors' effectiveness in their jobs, the extent of the directors' activities in performing managerial tasks, and the level of organizational change in the libraries. Selected demographic and professional variables were also studied.
In general, colleagues external to the library tended to evaluate the director more highly than did internal subordinates. The subordinates ratings, in turn, tended to match more closely the directors' own reports of their activity in managerial tasks. Regression analysis showed moderate or slight levels of association between four of the five categories of change and levels of leader activity and with overall perceived effectiveness. A moderate negative association was found between reported rates of change and the length of time that the director had occupied that position.
Four key patterns of effectiveness, activity and change were identified, which included 78.6% of the study population, and leader profiles developed for each. Evaluation of the profiles leads to the conclusion that within this study, there is no single characteristic or combination of characteristics which is related to effectiveness, but that successful leader behavior is related to the organizational environment.
