The aim is to discover, if only for a small part of the population of a small part of Mexico, the broad, slow rhythms of change that underlay the chaotic and distracting political surface of the century that divides Mexico's two great social uprisings, the Hidalgo Rebellion of 1810 and the Revolution of 1910. How did the nature and function of the wealthy classes change in the course of these years during which, despite their turbulence, the structure of society is usually perceived to have remained much the same? |
