Title: CARL H. MILAM AND THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
Abstract: From its founding in 1876, the American Library Association was led by librarians and others interested in the development of libraries and of librarianship as a profession. A permanent headquarters and a staff were a part of the Association's plans and hopes, but a headquarters in Chicago was not established until well into the twentieth century. In 1920, after years as a practicing librarian and service in the ALA Library War Service, Carl H. Milam became the Association's secretary, later its executive secretary, and remained in that post of leadership until 1948.
The twenty-eight years of Milam's service to ALA extended from the aftermath of one war through the aftermath of another. The financial depression, World War II, and other events had their impact on the growing ALA. Major assistance from foundations and growing interest in libraries on the part of the federal government occurred in that period, while in librarianship itself, concerns for professional education, rural library development, international aspects of librarianship, and intellectual freedom were manifest. Milam played a part in identifying these concerns and in representing ALA and librarianship in dealing with them.
This biographical study presents a brief background of ALA from 1876 to 1920, a review of Milam's life up to 1920, and studies of Milam's major areas of leadership within the Association and the profession. A concluding chapter reviews his work as director of the United Nations Library and his years of retirement before his death in 1963.
