Abstract: From its founding in 1876, the American Library Association was led by librarians and others interested in the development of libraries and of librarianship as a profession. A permanent headquarters and a staff were a part of the Association's plans and hopes, but a headquarters in Chicago was not established until well into the twentieth century. In 1920, after years as a practicing librarian and service in the ALA Library War Service, Carl H. Milam became the Association's secretary, later its executive secretary, and remained in that post of leadership until 1948. |
