Title: THE NATURE OF DIDACTICISM AS RELATED TO ROMANCE AND SEXUALITY IN YOUNG ADULT NOVELS, 1965-1978

Abstract: A didactic tradition has been evident in young adult literature since its early stages of development. During the 1960s, the incorporation of socially controversial themes and issues in the literature resulted in a type of young adult fiction known as the "new realism", Several critics and reviewers during this period suggested that the "new realism" produced a new form of didacticism related to contemporary, liberal attitudes, particularly in regard to sexuality. This assumption was tested through the investigation of didactic intent in twenty-five novels in which major themes were related to romance and sexuality. The novels were critically analyzed in order to ascertain the types of messages which were in evidence, the relationship of these messages to contemporary social attitudes regarding romance and sexuality, and the nature of the didacticism within the context of the literary form knovffi as the "new realism" The study revealed that although didactic elements were apparent in these novels, the sophistication and complexity of the literary form resulted in a more subtle, less obtrusive style of didacticism than had traditionally existed in the literature.
