Title: COLLECTION OVERLAP AND DIVERSITY IN THE ILLINOIS LCS (LIBRARY COMPUTER SYSTEM) NETWORK
Abstract: The LCS computer network in Illinois contains machine-readable records representing the collections of each of the member academic libraries. Twenty-one of the twenty-two libraries in the LCS network as of 1983 agreed to participate in a study of collection overlap. Using a microcomputer functioning as a terminal, a random sample representing about one percent of each collection was drawn. A procedure to match and merge records that represented the same book was devised that proved to be more than 97% accurate. Various tables were generated that displayed the extent of collection overlap and collection diversity among the twenty-one libraries for a number of date, subject, and language categories.
The significant findings were: (1) Consistent with previous studies, a high percentage of titles, 69.46%, were held by just one library; (2) a percentage of the collection of each library was found to be unique to that library, ranging from 6.1% to 68.4%; (3) when examining the overlap among pairs of libraries, the extent that one library overlapped with another increased with the size of the second library. Special libraries deviated from this trend because of the specific, intensive nature of their collections; (4) while there appears to be a linear relationship between size and overlap, there is a limit to this relationship that becomes evident when a very large library is included.
The findings of this study support the value of a resource sharing network because they show that all libraries in a network have something unique to contribute and that even the largest libraries gain a significant number of titles not available in their own collections.
