Title: Linguistic aspects of natural language processing

Abstract: "Most of the work in natural language processing is not primarily concerned with the nature of natural language. Rather the primary concern is the efficiency of parsers which were originally designed for entities other than natural language. The major thrust of this thesis is that it is profitable in natural language processing to concentrate on specific linguistic facts and construct parsers in such a way that their design depends on particular aspects of this structure. It is further argued that some of the weaknesses inherent in other parsers can be successfully addressed by a parser which crucially depends on the view of the organization of syntactic structure provided by framework F (Kac 1978, 1980, 1985).

The central claims of this dissertation are that decisions made while parsing should be made only when sufficient information is available to support them and that subordination relationships form the core structure upon which the rest of the structures of the sentence depend. Subordination relationships should be discovered early in parsing and once they are known they can guide the rest of the parse. This guidance can best be exploited if syntactic structure is assigned throughout the sentence in phases. After the discovery of subordination relationships, complex arguments are identified, and finally simple arguments are found. Framework F is crucial to this view of parsing in that it naturally supports the assignment of syntactic structure in phases.

In order to support these claims a grammar for a subset of English is proposed, and argu-mentation is given in its support. Consideration is given to the benefits the parser receives from this particular grammar. Then a parser which can recognize the structures under consideration and which is based on this grammar is developed. It is demonstrated how this parser recognizes the structures and how it overcomes some of the weaknesses in other parsers."
