Subsequently, these innovations have encouraged many to negotiate the intersections of literacy with emerging technologies and to research effective ways to teach skills associated with using emerging technologies. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine 23 students' use of technology in an interdisciplinary multi-media class at a large midwestern university. The course was designed to teach students how to communicate by combining digital sound, text, and graphics through interfaces unique to the media and content of the message. As such, the primary goal of the study was to examine how students used technology to communicate and to determine which curricular strategies proved helpful toward that end. The findings indicate five curricular activities that proved helpful for students to learn and use multi-media communication technologies: articulating the importance of technology within their own disciplines and interests, developing process and reflective approaches to learning technology skills, identifying motivational factors to learn and use technology, identifying obstacles to learning with technology, and exploring technology as a means of self-expression. |
