Title: The comparative analysis of subject and form headings of 16 mm films by LC, NICEM, and PRECIS
Abstract: Films have become an important medium of mass communication and films collections have grown accordingly. A multiplicity of reference tools for films has created problems in the bibliographic control of the medium.
A number of approaches have been employed to study the subject access provided by reference tools. Some researchers have analyzed the behavior and the procedures of users. Specific subject healing lists have been examined as well as the application of such lists to specific disciplines. No study has ever examined subject access in reference tools for films.
The present study analyzed the subject indexing of educational films by comparing the terminology employed in three subject access systems: the Library of Congress Subject Headings as applied by the Library of Congress; the headings assigned by the National Information Center for Educational Media (NICEM) in its Index to 16mm Educational Films; and the PREserved Context Indexing System as used in the PRECIS Index of 16mm Films Distributed by the National Film Board of Canada.
The analysis was designed to collect and assess data on the current strategies used by the subject access systems in order to identify the commonality and the uniqueness of the headings. Subject access through reference tools for films was examined to gain an historical perspective on the types of headings assigned. For a sample of 100 educational films, the headings chosen by the three systems under consideration were analyzed to determine the number and type of access points and to identify indexing patterns as well as the indexing policies of the institutions doing the indexing. Telephone interviews were conducted with representatives of the three institutions that indexed the films.
This study found that LC and NICEM are less likely to have a dual approach to films by providing topical and nontopical headings than is PRECIS. In addition, there is a lack of standardization in the nontopical headings used by all three systems to describe cinematic properties. Lastly, the indexing exhaustivity through either general and specific headings or cross-references is greater in the PRECIS index than in the two other systems.
