Title: An exploration of the use of children's imagery in the promotion of health: An interdisciplinary study

Abstract: "This project explored the drawings and creative writing of children from diverse cultural backgrounds, who have experienced illness and hospitalization. The purpose was twofold: (1) to increase our understanding of children's imagery created in health care settings, and (2) to suggest guidelines to utilize that information for the optimal growth and development of children experiencing illness and hospitalization. An interdisciplinary approach included theoretical perspectives drawn from anthropology, art education, and art therapy, as well as a review of previous research on children's imagery.

The researcher collected samples of children's drawings and creative writing, recorded the processes undergone by the children in creating these products, and analyzed the results. The data collection was carried out in conjunction with the Child-Life Department at Schneider Children's Hospital during a five week period in April and May, 1987. The sample group of five children were seven to twelve-year-olds, of diverse cultural backgrounds, who were experiencing illness and hospitalization. The children created drawings and stories on a daily basis when possible. The children's spontaneous imagery was encouraged, but topics were provided by the researcher when necessary.

In the analysis of the data, each child was first described as a separate case study in order to provide a multi-faceted analysis and explore issues raised in each case. Categories for these case analyses were derived from the theoretical perspectives of anthropology, art education, and art therapy.

The second section of the analysis resulted in the implications of the study. The five cases were compared, contrasted, and cross-analyzed in relation to (1) cultural imagery, (2) formal and informal art education, and (3) individually-oriented art therapy. Within each of these three areas, issues were discussed, suggestions for practice were presented, and directions for future research were offered within. The analysis includes discussion of processes of communication, which occur within the context of the creative sessions. Additionally, guidelines for the training of health care professionals, and for creative activities with hospitalized children and their families are suggested."
