SCHOOL: ADVISORS: COMMITTEE MEMBERS: MPACT Status: Fully Complete Title: The extent to which common property academic health sciences library journal collections contribute to individual productive use of the biomedical journal literature Abstract: The economic theory of common property resources exploitation serves as a framework for this exploration of the relationship between the size of health sciences library journal collections and the number of different journals cited by individuals in a national sample of 622 clinical and basic sciences tenure-track faculty in U.S. schools of medicine. The number of different journals cited in 1990-91 published articles serves as an empirical measure of the relative amount of productive use faculty make of the journal literature. The study also looks at the relationship between the number of articles published by individual faculty and the size of the health sciences library journal collection. Three ordinary least squares empirical regression models are estimated using over forty variables describing the library journal collections, other library resources, the schools of medicine, the faculty authors, as well as bibliographic characteristics of the journal articles. The results suggest that, after controlling for other model variables, neither individual faculty productive use of the journal literature (measured by the number of different journals cited) nor individual research productivity (measured by the number of articles published) is significantly influenced by the size of the journal collection available in a school's health sciences library. On the other hand, the results suggest that the size of a library's journal collection is influenced by the collective research productivity of a school's faculty and, perhaps, also by the extent to which they cite the journal literature. Variations in the numbers of journals individual faculty cited and the numbers of articles they published were most strongly correlated with characteristics of the faculty's department setting, research colleagues, sex, academic rank, years of research and publishing experience, the number of institutions represented among article coauthors, and the types of articles published. Variations in the size of academic health sciences library journal collections were most strongly correlated with previous patterns of growth or decline in these collections, general measures of library resources and library use, the total number of potential library clients, the amount of publishing activity by faculty at the institution, and the proportion of foreign-trained faculty at the institution. |
