The first grants in Australia for library purposes made by the Corporation were for adult education libraries. After surveys made on behalf of the Corporation culminating in the Munn and Pitt Report (1935), attention was transferred to the development of public library services in Australia. The Library Group, linked with the Australian Council for Educational Research, and assisted by the Carnegie Corporation was in the forefront of this activity. The Free Library Movement, which operated at the State level, led to legislation in support of public libraries. The Movement and Carnegie Corporation surveys after Munn and Pitt are examined. The direct grants made by the Corporation to university and State libraries, to the National Library and to the Australian Institute of Librarians, later the Library Association of Australia, are described. |
