Title: FACTORS AFFECTING THE ATTITUDES OF LIBRARIANS AND FACULTY MEMBERS TOWARD MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to identify the attitudes of librarians and faculty members toward media technologies and the factors that predict these attitudes. The analysis of pertinent literature showed that both librarians and faculty members often register negative attitudes toward media technologies. The following hypotheses were formulated: (1) There is a direct relationship between the attitude of librarians and faculty members toward media technologies and their previous training experience in media technologies. (2) There is a direct relationship between the attitude of librarians and faculty members toward media technologies and the following variables: age, sex and subject specialization. (3) There is a direct relationship between the attitude of librarians and faculty members toward media technologies and such background factors experience and work environment. (4) There is a direct relationship between the attitudes of librarians and faculty members toward media technologies and the following: age of institution and nationality.

A survey technique was used to collect the data. The target population comprised of all the professional librarians and a random sample of full-time faculty members in four Nigerian universities.

The analyses of the data indicated that: (a) Both librarians and faculty members expressed high positive attitudes toward media technologies and their work environment. (b) Only three variables (predictors), previous training experience in media technologies, work experience and attitudes toward work environment, were found to be related to attitudes toward media technologies. Sex, age and work experience were found to be related to attitudes toward work environment. (c) The provision of media technologies by the libraries was found to be inadequate. (d) The use of media technologies by faculty members was very low.

Some barriers to the provision and use of media technologies were identified as inadequate accommodation facilities, repairs and replacement, irregularity in the supply of power, insufficient personnel, inattention to training, lack of support from university administrators, foreigness in content, cost and financial constraints.
