Title: THE ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS' ATTITUDES TOWARD LIBRARIANSHIP IN THE TRI-STATE AREA: PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO AND WEST VIRGINIA
Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of academic librarians toward librarianship. Three hypotheses were tested: (a) Academic librarians in the college and university libraries in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia differ significantly in the type of attitudes they have toward librarianship, (b) There are significant differences in attitudes toward librarianship of librarians in the college and university libraries in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, according to their sex, age, years of service, salary satisfaction, education, and the positions they currently hold, and (c) Academic librarians working in small-size college and university libraries in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia have more positive attitudes toward librarianship than those working in large-size libraries.
The final sample group consisted of 379 professional librarians from thirty-six college and university libraries in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. A two-part questionnaire was used to gather the necessary information. The first part was designed to investigate six demographic variables: sex, age, years of service, salary satisfaction, education, and the position the librarian currently holds. The second part consisted of forty-four opinion statements to bring to light favorable/unfavorable responses concerning the librarians' attitudes toward librarianship. The scoring system was based on five-point likert type scale.
T-test, analysis of the variance, and factor analysis were used to interpret and analyze the collected data. The level of significance was set at .05.
The major findings of the study are: (1) There is no significant relationship between geographic location in the Tri-State area and the mean scores of the participants achieved on the scale measuring their attitudes toward librarianship; (2) The relationship between the demographic variables and the attitudes toward librarianship showed no significant differences except for salary satisfaction; (3) There is no significant difference between those employed in large vis a vis small libraries and the score of attitudes they have toward the profession; and (4) Academic librarians' attitudes toward librarianship are affected by five factors, namely: sociability and electronic communication; creativity and advancement; professionalism of librarianship; altruism and self-confidence; and technology and social changes in librarianship.
