From 1915 onward, the Society experienced chronic and increasingly severe operating deficits brought about by its embarking on an ambitious program of research and scholarly publication. Chapter II recapitulates the first century of the Library and Map Department history as presented by J. K. Wright's Geography in the Making. This study continues the centennial history for the Library and Map Department, including relevant aspects of the Society's history. Library and Map Department operations are examined with respect to six areas: personnel, acquisitions, cataloging, space, services, and staff professional activity. After World War II, the Society's operating deficits, though stemmed for about six years, became alarmingly large and its endowment, severely weakened during the Depression, was further drained as assets were liquidated periodically to cover the deficits. Finally, the Society decided to part with the collections. The search for a suitable recipient concluded with an agreement to transfer the collections to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Library. Legal complications ensued. Chapter VII details preparations for moving the collections and the move itself. The general conclusion is that the Library and Map Department developed their collections under extreme difficulty as the Society, unable or unwilling to break with its tradition, failed to establish viable revenue sources adequate to support its programs, including the Library and Map Department. |
