Title: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE NEEDS FOR ACHIEVEMENT, AFFILIATION AND POWER AND FREQUENCY OF USE OF INFORMATION SOURCES AND SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTIVITY AMONG NIGERIAN VETERINARY SURGEONS
Abstract: Studies of information needs and information-seeking behavior, generically termed "user studies," have sought to discern the information needs and information seeking behavior of users of library and information systems. It was hoped that the knowledge gained from these studies would assist in the design of more effective information systems. This early vision was not realised mostly because the needs and behavioral patterns of scientists and technologists turned out to be more variegated than had been presupposed. These studies, however, generally found that certain individuals obtain and use information sources more frequently than others.
Some studies have examined factors that may explain this differential use of resources and have come up with variables such as the discipline within which one is working, the work place and several demographic variables like the experience of the information seeker, status and user education. These studies have however failed to explain why some people seek and use information sources more frequently than their colleagues who are in seemingly similar external circumstances. This implies that some of the reasons for differential use of sources may be found elsewhere, possibly in the personalities of the subjects.
This study, therefore, measured the relationship between the social and psychological needs for achievement, affiliation and power acting singly or in concert, and frequency of use of information sources and scientific productivity among Nigerian veterinary surgeons. The needs were measured from the scales for achievement, affiliation and dominance adopted from the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS), and analysed using both the Pearson product movement correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis.
The results have shown that there is a significantly positive correlation between the need for achievement and scientific productivity. There is, however, no significant correlation between the other needs, acting singly or in concert, and frequency of use of information sources, and scientific productivity. The study, therefore, suggests that a relationship exists between the need for achievement and scientific productivity.
