Title: THE NATURE OF MANAGERIAL WORK: THE EXTENT MINTZBERG'S ROLES ARE REQUIRED BY THE CHIEF EXECUTIVES IN ACADEMIC AND PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Abstract: This study used job-activity questions tied to the managerial role model developed by Henry Mintzberg. The purposes of this study were to determine what managerial roles and role groups were found in the position of the chief executive of academic and public libraries, to evaluate the adequacy of Mintzberg's managerial role model in terms of "goodness of fit," and to describe the managerial position of the chief executive in terms of job content, managerial roles and role groups and statistically show any differences or similarities between the two population groups.
The research methodology utilized a questionnaire instrument that identified managerial job activities and that operationally defined and explained the various managerial roles. Research Question 1 asked to what extent are chief executives in academic and public libraries engaged in activities that correspond to Mintzberg's role description? The results of this study indicated that academic and public library directors were similar when rating job activities and managerial roles. Research Question 2 asked to what extent are Mintzberg's roles, grouped as interpersonal, informational, and decisional, found in the managerial postion of the chief executive in academic and public libraries? The results indicated that both academic and public library directors were similar to rating Mintzberg's role group. Research Question 3 asked to what extent are Mintzberg's roles, grouped by Alexander as strategic management, operational management, external interfacing, and internal interfacing, found in the managerial position of the chief executive in academic and public libraries? The results indicated that both academic and public library directors were similar in rating Alexander's managerial role group.
The statistical analysis conducted in this study revealed the homogeneity of results. Academic and public library directors reported results that were similar. There were few dissimilarities. Managerial job activities and managerial roles performed were comparable and independent of the library setting or environment. Comparisons were made to other studies in the public and private sector that used the same validated questionnaire used in this study. The results of the comparisons were that academic and public library directors rated job activities and managerial roles similar to the ratings by private and public sector executives.
