Title: LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LIBRARY INSTRUCTION: USING TARGET LANGUAGE RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM
Abstract: The objective of this project was the design and evaluation of a sample target language (Spanish) library instruction workbook. The format demonstrates how instruction in target language reading skills can be integrated with the library research process.
The sample workbook was based upon the results obtained from an analysis of the language used in a set of six English language library instruction workbooks which used the literature search as a common conceptual framework. A text analysis method intended for use with instructional texts, Relational Mapping, was applied to the workbook presentations of three resources: encyclopedias, the card catalogue, and serial indexes. These resources form the nucleus of library research at the undergraduate level. The analysis indicated a set of core concepts that were common to the six presentations of the three resources. The core concepts and their organization provided a pattern for the Spanish version.
A topic focus for the workbook, popular music, was selected. Exercises in the practice of foreign language reading strategies were identified, and the instructional objectives for the presentation of each resource were specified. The presentations were linked together by the process of setting up a question for a paper in sociology.
The sample workbook was submitted to a panel for review. Members represented perspectives from foreign language education, library instruction, linguistics, and Spanish. Evaluations were made using scaled statements that gave the bases for the workbook, the objectives, the exercises, the matches between resources and objectives, and the target language workbook as a general concept and specific demonstration.
The reviewers gave strong endorsements of both the idea and the demonstration. Integrated with the specific objectives at various course levels, target language library instruction workbooks can be of value to the realization of the goals of language and library instruction.
