Title: The collecting of incunabula in Pittsburgh: A study in institutional and individual activity

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the collections of incunabula found in Pittsburgh, both those found in institutions and those assembled by individuals. The collecting motives of these institutions and individuals were identified. Other factors were also examined, including the manner that one rare book collection in combination with a good facility attracted another rare book collection. Of particular interest were the factors relating to the transfer of incunabula from private to institutional hands.

The historical method was used in the study. The study was based on a census of incunabula done in 1986. The institutions chosen were the University of Pittsburgh Libraries, Carnegie Mellon University Library, the library of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The private collectors examined were Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt, Charles J. Rosenbloom, Henry Posner Sr., all deceased, and an Anonymous Collector, who was still active in the Pittsburgh area. Sources used included records and letters kept by private collectors, interviews with individuals familiar with the private collectors, interviews with the institutional librarians, and in the case of the Anonymous Collector, personal interviews with the collector. In addition, the books themselves were examined for evidence of ownership and their trip through history.

The findings of the study indicated that the incunabula in the institutional collections examined were the results of the efforts of private collectors, primarily Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt, Charles J. Rosenbloom, and Henry Posner, Sr. Their donations created the bulk of incunabula found in the institutional collections. These three collectors acquired incunabula as part of their larger collecting interests and they were not collecting incunabula as a particular collecting focus. The incunabula in their collections were examples of their primary collecting interests, ie, botany, illustrated books, or the classics of literature. The fourth private collector collected incunabula exclusively. This collector shares a love of books with the other private collectors in the study. This desire to collect was their first motivation for collecting. For Mrs. Hunt, Mr. Rosenbloom, and Mr. Posner, it was only after the collections grew to a great size and value were thoughts of a public purpose for these collections discussed.
