Title: A formal language model for local area network configuration

Abstract: Current design of local area networks (LANs) is controlled by technology rather than the needs of organizations and manufacturing establishments. Thus, most common implementations of LANs in organizations are Ethernets and Token-rings. Research trends, however, indicate the marked differences between user expectations and LAN realities. In response to the trends in research, attempts at obtaining the requirements of organizations to drive the design of LANs are being made. However, these attempts are typically concentrated on the development of efficient LAN protocols. The need to redirect research efforts towards the development of expert systems that enable organizations to design LANs that best meet their requirements is the objective of this dissertation.

Most expert system shells on the market are dedicated to fault diagnosis systems. Many of these have been employed for the trouble shooting of networks. In order to generate an expert system that designs LANs to suit specific user environments and requirements, a new expert system shell is required. This requirement calls for the formulation of a formal language that can be used to express the design of LANs.

This dissertation presents a model for the formal specification of LANs that best suits the structural and operational characteristics of LAN user establishments. The establishment consists of a set of agents which interact with each other through electronic devices. The agents are considered as models of workstations. The interactions of agents determine the relationships among workstations within the establishment. Analysis of the functional activities of the agents reflects the activities that go on within establishments and therefore lead to the construction of the model language for LAN design. This sets the stage for the configuration of more appropriate LAN designs for specific establishment needs.
