Title: A descriptive study of African American and White Master of Library Science (MLS) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduates of the University of Pittsburgh, 1973-1985

Abstract: This study investigated the career patterns, lifestyles and economic status of minority graduates of Master of Library Science (MLS) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. After examining minority graduates from both disciplines, all minority MLS graduates were compared with White female MLS graduates.

The descriptive survey method was the data collection method selected for this study. An extensive questionnaire was mailed to 1200 majority and minority MLS graduates. Data on minority MBA graduates was provided through a comparable instrument used to collect data on the university's MBA graduates. Professional terminology and acronyms were the only modifications of the instrument.

The following hypotheses and research questions were addressed in this study:

Hypothesis I. There is a difference in the career patterns, economic status, and lifestyle values of minority MLS and minority MBA graduates for the University of Pittsburgh.

Hypothesis II. Race or ethnicity does make a difference in the career patterns of majority MLS and minority MLS graduates.

(1) Do minority MLS and MBA graduates of the University of Pittsburgh have different career patterns? (2) Do minority MLS and MBA graduates have different attitudes toward lifestyle values and career aspirations? (3) Does race or ethnicity make a difference in minority and majority MLS salaries? (4) Do family issues affect the income of minority MLS and majority MLS graduates?

Findings revealed that there is a very significant difference in the starting and current gross salaries of minority MBA graduates. There was no significant difference in the starting salaries of majority and minority MLS graduates. Present salaries were higher for Black librarians than their White counterparts, but White female librarians experienced more promotions.

Minority graduates sometimes believed discrimination to be racially motivated whereas majority librarians indicated sexual discrimination was a major concern. A similar study involving graduates from more than one library school would perhaps provide further insight into these issues of concern.
