Title: BIRD: Browsing interface for retrieval of documents

Abstract: BIRD (Browsing Interface for Retrieving Documents), is a direct manipulation interface for information retrieval. Users can split sets of documents based upon the presence or absence of keywords, merge sets in different combinations, and manually remove or add individual documents to sets. The interface provides visual feedback concerning the size and documents contained in each set. The manipulations are equivalent to procedurally composing Boolean queries. The design applied precepts from the research on display-based problem solving. The concept of a direct manipulation interface designed according to such principles seems appealing. However, users had difficulties. An experimental comparison showed that, at least for a pool of computer-literate users, the interface was not easier to use than a conventional textual Boolean query interface with postings information. This dissertation clarifies the difficulties uncovered in this study and discusses implications for the design of visual direct manipulation interfaces for information retrieval systems.
