Title: THE INFLUENCE OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES
Abstract: This study examined the extent to which Management Information Systems influence strategic planning for collection development in academic libraries. A survey was conducted to determine whether academic libraries follow the Management Information Systems model and, if they do not follow that model, what model do they follow; to reveal the management tools being employed and the type of data being collected to improve planning and decision-making for collection development; to uncover the environmental factors being considered for these decisions; and to learn the extent to which collection or acquisition plans are being devised.
A two part survey of Association of Research Libraries member libraries, which are also classified as Doctorate Granting Institutions according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, was designed. The library director was asked to indicate the type of automation, management information system environment existing in the library. The collection development officer was then asked to indicate the extent to which this environment was exploited for collection development decision-making and to provide specific information needed to answer the research questions.
Of the ninety-two institutions mailed letters and Director's Questionnaires, twelve refused to participate. Eighty collection development officers, or individuals so designated by the directors, were mailed Collection Development Officer surveys. Sixty-seven Collection Development Officer Questionnaires were completed and returned. Only the replies from the sixty-seven libraries which responded to both parts of the survey were analyzed.
The study found that libraries are using some automated tools for collection development planning, that the institutional Management Information/Decision Support Systems are not being used as part of this process, that environmental factors are being considered as part of collection development planning, and that a minority of libraries are devising collection development plans to guide acquisition decisions.
